Welcome! This is a website that everyone can build together. It's easy!

Libraries and Web 2.0 HomeThis is a featured page

WHAT THIS WIKI AIMS TO DO:

  • Create a record of Web 2.0 (definition) usage by libraries around the United Kingdom
  • Build a useful resource for librarians around the South East / country interested in Web 2.0
  • Provide evidence on the usefulness of Web 2.0 and set it in context
  • Develop a more up-to-date version of "23 things" as a training tool for staff

Who are we?

We're a group of UK librarians who think Web 2.0 will have a profound effect on public libraries, and we're looking at how we can direct that effect rather than follow along behind it.

NEWS:

January 2011: Richard Aird from Dunbartonshire, who constantly does useful things, says: "you may be interested in the Social Media Governance website which brings together social media policies from a range of businesses and organisations: http://socialmediagovernance.com/policies.php In the list, the UK Government Twitter guidelines are available, parts of which are most useful."

August 2010: Interesting article about Sarah Hammond's research into Web 2.0 in public libraries, published in Ariadne: Public Library 2.0: Culture Change?

July 2010: 23 Things was evaluated by 11 public library authorities, 15 FE/HE organisations and 2 health authorities. Aberdeen, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Surrey are now working on revising the course with the intention of rolling it out to frontline staff from the Autumn.

May 2010: The training course on Web 2.0 for library staff is now complete, and we are looking for people willing to evaluate it. You can see it at http://23things.wetpaint.com. For more information, contact helen.leech@surreycc.gov.uk or patricia.garrett@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

April 2010: Here's another document you ought to dutifully read if you've got any interest in digital services in public libraries: The Role of Public Libraries in supporting and promoting digital participation, from the MLA, published January this year. http://research.mla.gov.uk/evidence/download-publication.php?id=1214.

March 2010: The long-awaited public library review has been published, and says some very promising things - including: "Government recommends that all libraries allow access for users to social networking sites which are valuable communication tools and part of our cultural infrastructure." It's a pity they didn't say that local authorities should allow their staff to access social networking, but never mind. You can find the review at http://www.culture.gov.uk/reference_library/consultations/6752.aspx

New SOCITIM report: Social Media - why ICT management should lead their organisations to embrace it
SOCITM (bless 'em) have produced another useful report advocating the use of Web 2.0 in local authorities. It's only available by subscription, so you'll need to find out if there is a copy somewhere in your organisation. Published January 2010, ISBN 9781904414988.

January 2010: Google Wave continues to make waves.
David Jenkins from Manchester Metropolitan University has done a straw poll of library users of GW and has kindly given us permission to publish it here - you'll find it attached to the bottom of this page.

Slainte have produced a useful guide to using Web 2.0 in libraries.

There's a new JISCMAIL mailing list: Web 2.0 use in libraries.

"A list for anyone interested in Web 2.0 and its uses in libraries. Specifically for those interested in developing Web 2.0 content for their library service, including social networking tools, mashups and other media. "

You can find it and join at https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=LIS-WEB2

We gave a presentation to SCL SE on Friday 11 September 2009, covering why we think Web 2.0 is important to public libraries.
You'll find it as an attachment to this page (have a look at the very foot of the page.)

Dear all

I am organising a briefing session for librarians from public libraries to come to the British Library and find out more about how the Library has developed and manages social media. The briefing will be held on Friday the 23rd July at 15:00.

If you would like to attend, please email me directly: claire.alleguen@bl.uk

Kind regards

Claire

Hi Both

I really enjoyed our meeting the other day. It was so nice to meet people interested in the same things and on the same wave length.

I have started putting together a wiki based on notes I took when we met. Please feel free to change anything you like. Let me know if you agree or disagree with the aims that I have included. They might perhaps be more ambitious than you wish them to be (or not ambitious enough) but they are what I took from the meeting.

I look forward to meeting up again.
Marianne
